It’s Not Enough: Part Two

Yet, we need to come to this conclusion. We need to see the vanity of every avenue of life that rejects God as its centre, its core, its goal. We need to fully and deeply feel the despair of realising that every turn ends with the same answer: this is not enough. We need to realise that no part of anything we do, see, feel, think, believe, or pursue will be enough to fill the gaping hole in our souls.

And when this realisation hits, we must weep. We must weep that we have been so foolish to despise God, to believe that we could find contentment in such small and meaningless things. Because contentment is not there. It is not in living a successful life. It is not in having the perfect job. It is not in a happy marriage. It is not in fame or money. It is not in perversion or shameful things. It is not in whatever idol you have created to block out and silence the cry of eternity within your soul. And we do weep, for these are the places we frantically search for contentment.

However, this should also cause us to rejoice. We should thank God that contentment is not found in our idols, and that God will never allow us to experience full satisfaction from such idols. We should rejoice that God will not and does not bow to our idols.

And we should rejoice, because true contentment is to be found. It is not a useless, fruitless journey. The search does have an end, and it is a glorious end. It is glorious, because the search ends with God Almighty Himself. We should rejoice that the contentment we seek is found in Someone greater than our foolish, rotting idols.

The weariness within mankind’s soul finds rest. The hole in his heart is filled to the brim, overflowing with eternal, all-satisfying Living Water. The deepest longings of the heart, even the ones that cannot be expressed with words, are met with the fullness of Christ. The groaning of the soul finds rest as it drinks deeper and deeper of the riches and blessings of Jesus, finding no end to His beautiful Person.

Do not settle for empty idols. Do not settle for worshipping creation while you stand in the awesome glow of the glory of God Himself. Do not fall for empty goals, crawling after them in the mud and muck, while the full riches of Christ are before you. Do not fool yourself into thinking contentment can be found anywhere other than Christ.

Christian, fight for contentment in Christ. Hold fast to Him. Run towards Him with all your might, rejecting every idol that grasps at you and tugs on you along the way. Set your all on Him, being blind to all the World tries to offer, blind to them because the glory of eternity glistens and twinkles in your eyes. Fight for contentment, for He is your life. He is enough.
