To Be Known

A human egg cell is about the size of a grain of sand, approximately 0.1mm. All humans start off this size: tiny and minute, unable to even keep ourselves alive. To any passer-by, this cell would seem like a piece of fluff, an insignificant tiny speck. The beauty of this phenomenon is that these little specks, from the time of conception, contain life. This speck is a soul, a living being, created in the image of God. It grows and is formed by the hands of a glorious Creator who carefully designs each new being exactly right, exactly as He intends.

An even more beautiful thought is the presence of God in His creation. Nothing is hidden from Him. He knows it well. He knows you well. For the wicked, this is a terrifying reality. There is no escaping God’s piercing, holy eyes. The light of His glory bursts through even the darkest places, bringing light to the deepest depths and the highest of heights. He sees the thoughts of man, knowing the very intentions of the heart. Truly, there is no place where God is not.

A truly terrifying thought for the wicked is the absolute reality that this same Creator who sees the unborn, forming them in the womb, is the same One who will judge. He has seen all, remembering it all, and His judgement will be just. There is no escaping the fire of His fury, nor the outpouring of His wrath. His gaze of pure holiness reaches into the soul, and the wicked are left with no place to hide before this righteous Judge. The terror of that reality is too heavy to carry.

However, for the righteous, this reality of being known is the greatest joy and peace we will ever know. To be known by the Creator, to have no place to go where He is not, brings peace and assurance. For the God of the Universe not only knows you fully, but also loves you fully as well.

Jesus chose to take on humanity, to become the size of a grain of sand, to be born as a baby, to experience the full human experience, to suffer, to die, and to rise again, so that we could know Him fully. This means that we will not face the fire of judgement, nor the fearful gaze of inescapable wrath. We will not feel the terror of piercing eyes set on us in hot fury. We will never pay the ultimate wages of sin, because the debt has been paid out in full. We gasp at the wonder of God setting His heart upon such insignificant specks.

God’s thoughts are now precious to us. God’s searching gaze is welcomed as we seek His guidance in the way of everlasting. We freely run to Him, not ashamed to stand before Him, for we have been purchased and brought into eternal life. The Creator’s eyes rest on us in love, the same eyes that know us perfectly, the same eyes that saw us formed in the secret place. These are the eyes we long to gaze into, for when we see His face, the cloud of confusion and finite-ness will fall away. The distractions of a fallen, lazy mind will be pulled away as we set our face towards the glory of the King. We will gaze into His eyes, finally grasping fully, for the first time, what it is to truly be known.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139
